President's
Corner
by
Sharon Harris
How one man found 100 new
libertarian-leaning folks -- in one day!
Jeremy SasserCollins of Twin Falls,
Idaho celebrated the Fourth of July in a
great way. He used OPH (Operation
Politically Homeless) to discover about
100 new libertarian-leaning folks in his
community!
It was Jeremy's first experience with
OPH, the Advocates' acclaimed "event in
a kit" that makes libertarian outreach
effective, easy and... fun.
Most OPH teams operate with more than
one person, but Jeremy ran his OPH by
himself. That makes his success all the
more remarkable.
Jeremy sent us a report on his OPH
experience. Here are some excerpts:
Dear Advocates,
I had the pleasure of launching
Operation Politically Homeless at
our local July 4th Tea Party. The
experience was fantastic and a great
learning tool for others, but I
think I learned the most!
I collected about 100 names of
people
I did not know [and contact
information for them]. Many of them
were surprised to score in the
Libertarian section. I encountered
no one who didn't know what
libertarians were.
Next time I do an OPH event, I will
have with me copies of the
Advocates'
Discover Liberty outreach
tabloid. I will send the
participants who scored below
100/100 -- but within the
Libertarian section -- away with the
Discover Liberty tabloid as
"homework," telling them, "Now,
because you have the similar goal of
smaller government, study up on how
libertarianism can help you achieve
your goals without more government."
Now I'm planning to start a series
of Freedom Films showings, at which
I'll show popular documentaries and
invite the new names on my list.
Thank you, Advocates, for your
outreach tools, for these techniques
and for your help in shipping these
materials out to me so quickly.
Thank you, Jeremy!
You, too, can use OPH to discover dozens
or even hundreds of libertarian-leaning
folks in your community.
Find out more about OPH

Good News,
Bad News,
Unbelievable News
by James W. Harris
Cash for Clunkers: Another Giant
Gov't Flop
Syndicated columnist Steve Chapman
may have
summed up the absurd "Cash for
Clunkers" program better than
anyone:
"Cash
for Clunkers has been a thrilling
moment for advocates of expanded
government, who say it proves what
we can accomplish when our leaders
put their minds to it. They are
absolutely right. The program proves
the federal government is
unsurpassed at two things:
dispersing money and destroying
things.
"Of course, it already proved that
in Iraq. But for sheer rapidity of
confirmation, this program is hard
to beat."
Supporters of Cash for Clunkers
defend it on two grounds. First,
that new cars will be easier on the
environment. Second, that sale of
new cars will boost the auto
industry (which lobbied Washington
heavily in support of the program)
and the economy in general.
By those standards (and others) the
program is a giant, expensive, even
dangerous flop.
Consider:
* Many of the new cars being
purchased get poor mileage. Auto
sakes expert Edmunds.com
points out that the Ford Escape
crossover SUV is the most popular
vehicle being purchased in these
programs, and two full-size trucks
that get about 14 miles per gallon
are in the top ten.
* Any fuel savings may be lost
because the program encourages more
driving.
Says economist Jeffrey A. Miron:
"[C]ash for clunkers might cause
more driving, since new cars are
more fun to drive, and more
fuel-efficient cars are less costly
to operate."
* Energy is wasted and total fossil
fuel use might actually be
increased. Economist Jeffrey A.
Miron
notes: "It takes energy to scrap
old vehicles and produce new ones,
so the net effect of the program
might even increase the use of
fossil fuel."
* The program actually increases
toxic emissions.
According to Americans for Tax
Reform: "[S]everal studies point to
the fact that replacing old cars
with new ones in fact increases
carbon emissions, as the
manufacturing stage is responsible
for a large percentage of all toxics
released over the life-cycle of a
car."
* Most buyers would have traded
their cars in soon anyway -- without
the taxpayer-funded bonus. The New
York Times
notes that "Economists say that
most buyers simply moved up the
timing of their purchase..."
And Jeremy Anwyl, CEO of Edmunds.com,
said in the Wall Street Journal:
"Edmunds.com noted r ecently
that over 100,000 buyers put their
purchases on hold waiting for the
program to launch. Once consumers
could start cashing in on July 24,
showrooms were flooded and
government servers were overwhelmed
as the backlog of buyers finalized
their purchases. Secondly, on July
27, Edmunds.com published an
analysis showing that in any given
month 60,000 to 70,000
'clunker-like' deals happen with no
government program in place. The
200,000-plus deals the government
was originally prepared to fund
through the program's Nov. 1 end
date were about the 'natural'
clunker trade-in rate."
* Valuable resources are being
destroyed. The program mandates that
traded "clunkers" must be destroyed.
But many of these are perfectly
serviceable cars, that could provide
affordable and badly-needed
transportation for low-income
persons, first-time car buyers,
students, families seeking a
reliable second car, and the like.
These useful resources are now being
destroyed, and used car buying in
the future will be harder for the
people who can least afford it.
* Alleged gasoline savings are
greatly exaggerated, because many of
the "clunkers" were seldom used
anyway. The New York Times
notes that experts suspect the
trade-ins are often "spare cars in
multicar households, and driven very
few miles every year..."
and "Economists say ... that the
projected gasoline savings are
exaggerated because many of the
trade-ins were seldom used."
* The economy as a whole is harmed.
Wealth is being diverted or
destroyed, not created. The money is
forcibly taken by government to
subsidize some consumers and a few
favored industries. Consumers thus
cannot use that same money to spend
where they wish, to meet their
primary needs and desires.
Businesses where that money might
otherwise have been spent suffer.
The result is a net loss for
society.
* It's yet another dangerous
precedent. What industry will
taxpayers be forced to subsidize
next? Where does this stop? And
where in the Constitution is the
federal government given the power
to engage in these kinds of hijinks?
Cash for Clunkers -- yet another
disaster, brought to you by the
federal government.
Poll: Support for ObamaCare
Plummeting
The hard work by freedom movement
activists to halt the rush to
nationalized health care is paying
off.
According to a Rasmussen Reports
national survey released on August
11, public support for the
Democratic health care reform plan
is falling like a rock.
Only 42% of U.S. voters favor the
plan -- down five points from just
two weeks earlier.
53% oppose it -- up nine points
since late June.
More significantly, 44% of voters
strongly
oppose
the health care reform plan, versus
only 26% who
strongly favor it.
According to Rasmussen, most voters
(51%) say health care quality will
get worse, and costs will go up, if
the Congressional health care plan
is passed.
However, the government takeover
plan is far from dead. 51% of all
voters still say it is at least
somewhat likely that the health care
proposal will become law this year.
The message for freedom movement
activists? Keep up the good work!
Spread the word. People are
listening.
Tens of Thousands of U.K. Patients
Forced to Live in Agony
"Patients
forced to live in agony after NHS
refuses to pay for painkilling
injections."
That horrifying headline
appeared in the U.K. Telegraph
newspaper on August 2, 2009.
And the accompanying story is as
shocking as the headline promises.
Here's an excerpt:
"The Government's drug rationing
watchdog says 'therapeutic'
injections of steroids, such as
cortisone, which are used to
reduce inflammation, should no
longer be offered to patients
suffering from persistent lower
back pain when the cause is not
known.
"Instead the National Institute
of Health and Clinical
Excellence (NICE) is ordering
doctors to offer patients
remedies like acupuncture and
osteopathy.
"Specialists fear tens of
thousands of people, mainly the
elderly and frail, will be left
to suffer excruciating levels of
pain or pay as much as £500 each
for private treatment.
"The NHS currently issues more
than 60,000 treatments of
steroid injections every year.
NICE said in its guidance it
wants to cut this to just 3,000
treatments a year, a move which
would save the NHS £33 million.
"But the British Pain Society,
which represents specialists in
the field, has written to NICE
calling for the guidelines to be
withdrawn after its members
warned that they would lead to
many patients having to undergo
unnecessary and high-risk spinal
surgery."
Doug Bandow of the Cato Institute
notes: "The Obama administration
seems unable to understand why
Americans fear a federal takeover of
the health system. Maybe this will
give them a little more insight."
Obama's Drug Czar Spouts Flat-Earth
Science
The Drug Czar of (former
pot smoker)
President
Obama is sounding an awful lot like
the Drug Czars of (alleged
former pot smoker) George Bush
and (former
pot smoker) Bill Clinton.
In late July, explaining why he
supports continuing America's savage
war on peaceful marijuana smokers,
Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske
made this stunning declaration:
"Marijuana ... has no medicinal
benefit."
Oh, really?
Tell that to the dozens of medical
organizations
that have publicly recognized
marijuana's medical value, including
the American College of Physicians,
American Nurses Association,
American Public Health Association,
American Academy of HIV Medicine,
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,
Lymphoma Foundation of America,
American Academy of HIV Medicine,
and many more.
Or
tell it to the untold thousands of
patients -- many suffering from
grave illnesses -- who, following
their doctors' advice, are using
marijuana for medical purposes in
the 13 states that have legalized
the medical use of marijuana. (Or
who are doing so illegally in the 37
other states.)
Or perhaps best of all, tell it to
the esteemed National Academy of
Science's Institute of Medicine --
the "gold standard" of U.S. medical
opinion, whose membership includes
some of the world's leading
scientific and medical minds. In a
1999 study -- commissioned by (drum
roll please) the U.S. Drug Czar's
office itself -- the IOM
declared that marijuana had
medical uses and could be safely
used: "Nausea, appetite loss, pain,
and anxiety are all afflictions of
wasting, and all can be mitigated by
marijuana."
The so-idiotic-it's-hilarious movie
Reefer Madness was made in 1936.
Why, in 2009, are we still living in
it?
Oh,
The Injustice!
Libertarian journalist Sheldon
Richman
examines
the
outrage of insurance companies not
covering preexisting conditions:
"The house of a friend caught on
fire. While his home was aflame he
called an insurance company to buy
fire insurance. Honest fellow that
he is, he told the company rep that
his house was on fire as they spoke.
"The company refused to issue the
policy.
"When will we finally get
homeowner's insurance reform so that
companies will stop this cruel
practice of refusing to cover
preexisting conditions?
"After that we should move against
the life insurance companies'
vicious discrimination against dead
people."
---------------------------------------------
Quick Shots...
THE
TAX MAN COMETH: "Hey, at a
concert in Washington, D.C., Paul
McCartney dedicated the song
'Michelle' to Michelle Obama. And
then, I thought this was sweet, he
dedicated the song 'Taxman' to
Barack." -- Jimmy Fallon, "Late
Night with Jimmy Fallon," Aug. 3,
2009.
FINALLY HE'S SCARED: "I was
not intimidated during J. Edgar
Hoover's FBI hunt for reporters like
me who criticized him. I railed
against the Bush-Cheney war on the
Bill of Rights without blinking. But
now I am finally scared of a
White
House administration. President
Obama's desired health care reform
intends that a federal board
(similar to the British model) -- as
in the Center for Health Outcomes
Research and Evaluation in a current
Democratic bill -- decides whether
your quality of life, regardless of
your political party, merits
government-controlled funds to keep
you alive." -- legendary liberal
journalist
Nat Hentoff.
GRANDMA AND OBAMACARE:
"President Obama
says
he will not support a health-care
plan where the government gets to
decide whether to, quote, 'pull the
plug on Grandma.' Apparently,
Obama's plan calls for the much
quicker pillow option." -- Conan
O'Brien, "Late Night with Conan
O'Brien," August 11, 2009.

PERSUASION
POWER
POINT # 273
Smearing and Name-Calling Turn Off
the People You're Trying to Persuade
by
Michael Cloud
"This is straight out of Nazi
Germany," says one pundit.
"...a tactic pioneered by Stalin,"
says another.
"...just like the Ku Klux Klan,"
posts a blogger.
"This moves America closer and
closer
to
socialism," writes a columnist.
"Right out of the playbook of Adolph
Hitler," notes a political
commentator.
"A communist idea," writes another.
"...just like the Holocaust," says
another.
"Pure fascism!" says another.
Those kinds of extreme,
over-the-top, emotionally-charged
terms do NOT drive people away from
the idea being criticized. They do
NOT bolster the case against the
thing opposed.
They drive people away from the
critic. They reduce the credibility
of the critic. They undermine the
case of the critic.
The name-callers and smear-artists
often try to make an intellectual
case for their strategy. They plumb
the etymology of the word: its
origin and historical development,
its uses and meanings. They trace
the word's use by a group or person
that most people hate or fear:
Nazis, Communists, the Ku Klux Klan,
Hitler, or Stalin. Then, they insist
that their word use is correct --
and that they are sincere and honest
proponents of their viewpoint.
I'm not buying it. Nor do most
people. Neither should you.
If you're warning people against
putting cyanide in soft drinks, you
don't need to tell them the story of
the Jonestown suicide. You simply
tell them what cyanide is -- and
what it does.
If you're teaching people how to be
more effective gardeners, and
they're doing something that doesn't
work, you don't have to call it
"Lysenko communist horticulture" --
and demand they stop it. Just show
them what works and why. The garden
will prove your case.
If
you're arguing against "single-payer
medical care" (government as the
sole funder of medical care) or
"public option medical insurance"
(tax-funded, government-run option
medical insurance), you don't have
to call the proposal "socialism" or
"socialized medicine." Simply sketch
out the features, functions, costs,
and consequences of the proposal.
Compare it to the status quo. Is it
better or worse? Then propose the
free-market solutions in
my article "6 Simple Ways to
Dramatically Cut Medical Costs -- at
Zero Expense to Taxpayers."
Are my proposals better or worse
than "single-payer" and "public
option"? Better or worse than the
status quo?
Describing a proposal or idea you
oppose with inflammatory language,
emotionally-charged terms, and
extreme words turns off and drives
away the very people you want and
need to persuade.
Smearing and name-calling erodes and
erases your intellectual
credibility. So, too, with the
legitimacy of your position.
Do what Ludwig von Mises, Henry
Hazlitt, and Harry Browne did.
Unpack the Big Government proposal.
Break it down into its key parts.
Analyze the nature, functions,
costs, and consequences of each
part. Look up what free market
writers and economists have written
about each part. Your research may
well reveal a far stronger case than
you expected. Because the facts are
friendly to freedom.
Smearing and name-calling usually
backfire. Don't traffic in them.
Learn how to make strong cases
AGAINST Big Government proposals,
AGAINST their nature and
consequences.
A little reason goes a long way.

Ask
Dr.
Ruwart
Dr.
Mary Ruwart is a leading expert in
libertarian communication. In this
column she offers short answers to real
questions about libertarianism. To
submit questions to Dr. Ruwart, see end
of column.
Are smokers infringing on your rights?
QUESTION: I disagree with your
recent column on smoking. Why is it up
to the
non-smoker to choose a smoke-free
work environment or restaurant?
Isn't this a case where a person's right
to swing their arms (i.e., smoking) ends
with the next person's nose (potential
health risks and fouling the clothing of
non-smokers)? Isn't it the smokers who
are infringing on my right to be free of
their smoke?
MY
SHORT ANSWER: I, too, am a
non-smoker who appreciates a smoke-free
environment, so I know exactly where you
are coming from.
Libertarians don't support
government-mandated smoking bans in
restaurants and bars, because these
restaurants and bars are the property of
the owners, not the patrons or the
government. Only the owners of these
establishments have the right to
determine whether smoking will be
permitted.
Similarly, libertarians wouldn't outlaw
smoking in residences so that
non-smoking visitors wouldn't have to
breathe the smoke of their hosts. In
both cases, the owners decide what type
of environment that they will invest in;
patrons and visitors are free to decide
if they wish to expose themselves to
that environment.
Of course, "public" (government-owned)
property, like courthouses and municipal
buildings, poses special problems,
because the "owners" (supposedly the
entire citizenry, which include smokers
and non-smokers), are unlikely to agree
on whether or not to ban smoking there.
So settling such disagreements is almost
impossible. Such dilemmas support the
libertarian notion that
all
property (or at the very least, as much
as possible) should be private, and such
decisions left to the owners.
Clearly-defined property rights solve
many, many problems!

One-Minute
Liberty Tip
The "Public Option" is Neither
Public Nor Optional
by
Sharon Harris
 Proponents
of a government health insurance
plan have won a major rhetorical
victory by having it commonly
referred to as the "public option."
No defender of freedom should ever
use that term. It is sheer
propaganda, and highly misleading.
When you hear it used, consider
politely responding that it is
actually "the
so-called public option."
Point out that this term is
deceptive. Just as "public schools"
are really "government schools,
funded by taxpayers," the "public
option" is really a "government
health care plan, to be paid for by
your tax dollars." It's actually the
"government option."
Further, should it become law, it
will likely quickly become not just
an "option" but a
mandatory plan. Health
insurance companies must make a
profit or go out of business. The
government, of course, does not. It
can offer insurance policies at
below-market prices and operate at a
loss for decades (like the Post
Office, Amtrak, and endless other
examples). Government can also
burden and harass private sector
insurance companies with
ever-more-expensive mandates and
requirements that will drive them
out of business.
Soon enough, the "public option" may
well become the only choice for the
great majority of Americans, just as
high taxes and regulations have made
today's disastrous public -- excuse
me,
government -- schools the
only practical choice for many
Americans today, even those who
would greatly prefer private
alternatives.
The so-called "public option" is
also not "optional" in the sense
that taxpayers will have to fund it,
regardless of whether or not they
want to, and even if they find some
aspects of it offensive to their
moral views.
So don't let Big Government
advocates get away with language
like "public option."
Of course, virtually everyone
realizes our current system is badly
in need of bold change to help
consumers. So let your listeners
know that libertarians see this,
sympathize with those suffering
under our current system, and
support strong reforms to
dramatically increase consumer
choice, lower health care costs, and
help the needy. Be ready to offer
alternatives to the radical takeover
of our health care system being
promoted today.
Here are some excellent resources to
learn about common-sense market
reforms that would improve, not
destroy, our health care system:
