Do libertarians support the Fair Tax?

Published June 14, 2011 in Short Answers by Mary Ruwart

Question

Do you support the Fair Tax?

Answer

Libertarians believe that all taxes are immoral, so none could really be described as "fair."

However, some libertarians support a national sales tax (which is what the so-called Fair Tax is) as a replacement for the income tax. Some of these libertarian Fair Tax advocates feel that people will be much more enraged by a tax that they experience with every purchase, rather than one that is taken from their paycheck before they even see it. With each tax raise, everyone will become acutely aware of how much money is being taken from them. They will hopefully protest, taxes will be lowered, and what we render to Caesar will be lessened.

(Other arguments are also made by some libertarians in defense of the Fair Tax, including claims that it would be less intrusive and less costly than the income tax.)

While the above scenario is a plausible one, I suspect that the Fair Tax will one day be implemented without doing away with the income tax -- thus giving us the worst of both worlds.

I hesitate to support any tax for any reason. Harry Browne and Ron Paul said it best: "Abolish the income tax and replace it with nothing!"

Gravatar Nothing may be best, but a consumption tax would be less evil than the income tax. We must never be stupid enough to permit both. The income tax must be constitutionally repealed.

Gravatar Two conditions must exist to call taxes "fair": 1. the taxpayer must directly recieve the benefit or service for which the tax{payment for services rendered} is paid. For example, the cost to enter a National Park. A bad example, Property taxes to pay for a school when you have no children attending.2. The tax payment must pay for the particular benefit or service. These two conditions only allow for a use tax and never have these two allowances been fully embraced.

Gravatar With a national sales tax I will only be taxed when I choose to spend. If i choose not to spend, I pay no tax. This would encourage people to save, grow more of their own food, conserve energy and reduce waste. It's a great alternative to the present system.

Gravatar "The fair tax" has good arguements but the other taxes would have to go first. Robert some are stupid enough to permit both look at the 999 plan. What percentage would you consider to be fair? Personally I think import tariffs are a better way to go, as that puts more pressure to keep jobs here.

Gravatar A sales tax is regressive in that the poor would be taxed on 100% of their earnings while the rich would be taxed on say 1% of their earnings. It would also create a bartering system. Also, do you feel good about a company like Walmart collecting your taxes? Or how about the corner bar? The guy at the hot dog stand?

Gravatar In one question of the rceent weekly test..there was a statement income from 9 months service in Japan and 3 months service in India = Rs.something for calculating taxable income of ROR RNOR NR..y did we include only 3 months of service for NR and RNOR..because it may be possible that the person was employed in India to conduct his services partially in India and partially abroad..So income should be accrued in India ?
